I took these photos of my delicious niece; with my trusty Nikon N90s on Kodak Plus-X film. I love love love film… I love the grain, and the subtle hues from white to black. Since I picked up my first camera and saw my first print, my response has always been utterly visceral.

Meet Maria White of Maria White Ceramics. I love love love her porcelain creations. To watch her work is better than xanax – she fluidly creates these forms on her wheel making it look as if they pour from her very hands. I have the good fortune to happen by her studio on a regular basis… it is always an inspirational drive-by to see the her luminaries, eggs, and bottles (to name a few) waiting for their turn in the kiln. Her pieces are hand-thrown and then individually carved – each one injected with Maria’s vision. Do yourself a favor and visit her site to see her creations. And make sure to get on her mailing list for her bi-yearly sales. (then again, if you’re like me, you can’t wait until spring and will call for a personal showing of her work to select your favorite pieces). This week she is at the American Craft Council Show in Baltimore – stop by and say hello if you’re in the neighborhood!

[The Godfather]

Left to my own devices recently, I decided to whip up another side-business to entertain myself. Introducing Auntie Myrtle’s Bun In the Oven. So that means I’ve been baking a lot. And things have to be tested to make sure they taste okay (I adjust the recipes as I go) It’s for science. Just today I decided to throw together another batch of pumpkin bread to bring to a gathering later today. There will be five other people there, and as you can see from the photo, I made six loaves. Aren’t they pretty?
I’m very full.

[steve martin, The Jerk]
We have worked for a loooooong time to bring this baby together. So my very first blog is dedicated to the amazing guys at Every Angle Media: Josh, José and Michael. Put simply, they kick ass. If you look up tireless in the dictionary you will see their photos. I’m not kidding, go check, I’ll wait. …See?
I also need to add that I’m having flashbacks to the editorial column I used to write for my college newspaper (Boston University’s Free Press – known as The Freep). My column was called Aimless and I used to write it on my Mac Plus… a first-generation Mac (and for those of you keeping score, that would be system software v 1.0 – on a floppy disc – no internal hard drive). And the simple idea that I could cut one thought from one paragraph and paste it into another made my heart sing. Well, that and the bagels from Bruegger’s in Kenmore Square. Back then I wrote about boys. And waitressing…
As the days pass and the sunny weather carries on here in LA I will post about all those things that catch my eye. And possibly waitressing… we’ll have to see how it plays out.
Happy 2010!!
